As the sun begins to set, the city’s parks transform into havens of tranquility. Centennial Park, with its vast expanses of greenery, becomes a haven for picnickers and nature enthusiasts seeking solace amidst the breathtaking autumnal scenery. The fading light casts long shadows, creating an ethereal ambiance that stirs the soul.
In short, autumn in Sydney invites contemplation and introspection. Whether it’s a leisurely ferry ride along the Parramatta River, witnessing the sun’s reflection on the water’s surface, or taking a moment to sit beneath a tree in Hyde Park, the season encourages a deep connection with nature and an appreciation for life’s fleeting moments.
Consequently, the surreal atmosphere of Sydney’s autumn is a feast for the senses, igniting a range of emotions within each observer. It invites reflection, evoking a sense of nostalgia and reminding us of the transient nature of time. Amidst the vibrant colors, the afternoon sun’s golden glow infuses the landscape with warmth and vitality, leaving an indelible mark on the hearts of those fortunate enough to witness this ephemeral masterpiece.
And in this backdrop of the vibrant season of autumn, here comes our next episode of this wonderful encounter. As the autumn breeze blew through the trees in Hyde Park, the vibrant colors of the changing leaves filled the air with a warm, comforting feeling. The park was alive with the bustling of people and the sounds of nature, and it was here that a chance encounter took place between two strangers.
The first was a woman who had recently moved to Sydney and as coincidental it may sound it was her very first day living in Sydney when we met. Her love for greenery had led her to Hyde Park in search of some grass to touch and feel (see the video below). She wandered through the winding paths, admiring the autumn colors and breathing in the fresh air. As she paused to take in the beauty around, she found a quiet spot on the grass to sit and listen to some music. She closed her eyes and let the soft melody wash over her, feeling completely at peace with the world.
While lounging on the grass, soaking up the sunshine in beautiful Hyde Park, I interrupted Caitlyn’s moment of pure bliss to ask for a photo for my project. Caitlyn, as she introduced herself, had recently moved to Sydney from Castle Hill and sought solace in the tranquil greenery of Hyde Park, relishing the feeling of the grass beneath her fingertips. Unbeknownst to her, she caught my attention from a distance as I strolled along the adjacent footpath. Drawn to the way the sun was shining on her hair, illuminating it like a halo around her head, I quietly made my way closer, trying not to disturb her peaceful moment.
When I was close enough, waving my hand and saying loudly “Excuse me” – I went on, breaking the bliss of her uninterrupted listening of the tunes with a bold demand – “Can I take a photo of yours? It’s for a project.” Although a bit startled at first, she quickly realized that the inquisitive stranger meant no harm. Smiling back, she agreed, and after showing all the details of the project we decided to take a stroll for a spot. In our conversation, she even shared a funny story about her quirky love for apple juice, but only when she was feeling under the weather.
So, you like the juices? (Pointing at the bottle of orange juice I remarked)
Yeah… I do…
Orange juice? Is that your favorite?
Yeah…I reckon… Sometimes Apple juice… like when I am sick…
When you’re sick??!!
My mum used to always give me apple juice when I was sick…
So, now I just love it…
As I chatted with this whimsical and magical soul, it became evident that she found immense joy in immersing herself in the captivating scenes of animated movies, especially those crafted by the legendary Studio Ghibli. It was as if she could transport herself to a world where imagination had no limits—a place where fantastical creatures and breathtaking landscapes sprung to life, enthralling her senses and rekindling her childlike wonder.
Well… Castle Hill is not too far. What’s good over there?
There is really nice parks… And a lot of greenery which is why I liked a lot about it… But there isn’t much like bars or anywhere to go out. Not as many restaurants or anything…
With Frank Ocean’s soul-stirring melodies serenading her ears, she effortlessly merged her imagination with the picturesque realm of Studio Ghibli. In this harmonious blend of music and animation, she found solace, a safe haven where dreams seamlessly intertwined with reality, igniting an overwhelming sense of pure bliss.
Encountering Caitlyn was truly a delightful addition to my ongoing project of connecting with 100 strangers. Her unique story and shared love for whimsy and joyous experiences further enriched the tapestry of individuals who have touched my life.
